ACT Study Group, January 2015

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Study Groups
Portland, Maine
Led by Joel Guarna, PhD

1st Mondays ACT Study Group
Next meeting will be Jan 5, 2015 @ 8 am

Happy (almost) New Year!

Next week will be our first ACT Study Group of the year.  Here are a few agenda items:
New Years Resolution Edition of the Study Group.
Please do at least one of these homework exercises for next Monday:
  1. Complete a Matrix for a personal or professional goal.
  2. If you notice any of the resistance or ambivalence folks mentioned last meeting (re: completing a Matrix on yourself), complete a Matrix ABOUT completing a Matrix (with “complete a Matrix for group” as the toward move) on a personal or professional goal.
  3. Notice that you did or did not complete the Matrix…and perhaps notice what else is going on with you privately.  Share.  Don’t share.  Your call.
New book study.
“The ACT Matrix: A New Approach to Building Psychological Flexibility Across Settings and Populations” by Kevin L. Polk PhD (Editor) and Benjamin Schoendorff MA MSc (Editor).
We agreed to order, purchase or steal (?!) the Matrix book by Kevin and Benji S.  We will determine a plan for how to proceed with the book during the January meeting (no reading required yet).

Experiencing ACT: A Two-day Hands-on Workshop

Experiencing Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
A Two-day Hands-on Workshop
Feb 5-6 2015
Portland, ME
Led by Joel Guarna, PhD and Teresa Valliere, LCSW, LADC, CCS
Using a combination of didactic presentation and experiential exercises, this two-day workshop will delve into the ACT model and its application with a wide range of clinical concerns. A variety of ACT strategies, exercises, and metaphors will be demonstrated and practiced and later unpacked in our discussion. You will leave this training with a better understanding of ACT approaches to therapy, use of the Matrix and other exercises as clinical tools, and with specific skills you can employ immediately.
This workshop will be highly experiential. We plan to use a variety of exercises to give you a true taste of using ACT for yourself and with others. These exercises will encourage you to encounter the six ACT core processes directly with personal challenges you experience as a person and a helper (therapist, healthcare worker, etc.) and to role-play the types of challenges your clients or patients bring to you for help. You will experience ACT “from the inside” and get your hands dirty using ACT metaphors and exercises. Many of these exercises have been used in past workshops and were well-received by other participants. This will not be a “sit back and listen” lecture.
Please note that the Early Registration fee (valid through 12/31/14) is markedly reduced from the Regular Registration.  So don’t put this aside and forget about it until after the holidays!
About ACT
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a contemporary form of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that has shown much promise in helping clients with a wide range of emotional and behavioral difficulties. ACT introduces a comprehensive model of change including a creative set of metaphors and experiential exercises to help clients (a) move away from unworkable change strategies, (b) make healthy contact with thoughts, feelings, and other private reactions they have feared and avoided, (c) re-connect with their deepest values to set a direction for change and to motivate change, and (d) experience their struggles differently and in a manner that permits them to move forward with their lives now.

Prosocial/Group Processes.  At the last meeting, we followed-up on the Prosocial intervention done with the group.  Members who were present discussed various aspects of group norms and processes and considered ways to clarify our purpose, improve attendance, and perhaps increase the cohesion. We also discussed ways of making the decision-making and agenda-setting more inclusive.  We discussed possible follow-up with surveymonkey.com tool (sorry, not gonna happen until next year).  This month, we may follow-up on action plans to put these ideas into practice for the new year.
