April 6, 8-9:30 am. First Mondays ACT Study Group.
Group usually meets on the 1st Monday of each month. Location: Virtual Meeting via Zoom. Agenda: This month’s topic will be Rituals, for Good and for Ill: An ACT Perspective in which we will discuss useful rituals (rules and behavioral consistency and constraint in contexts where that works) and ritualistic behavior in OCD.

April 8, 7-8:00 pm. EvoS Book Club Weekly Meeting!
A pandemic-era experiment in staying connected!  For those who want to join us, we will be reading Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society by Nicholas Christakis. Sounds like a good science-y antidote to the tribalism, isolation, and fear many people are experiencing right now.

If you want to participate, even sometimes:

  1. Send an email to me so I know to include you about updates.
  2. Order or download the book to be delivered by Amazon, shop local through Longfellow Books (yes, they are still placing orders for pick-up), or order for curbside pick-up through BAM. Or whichever bookseller you prefer.
  3. Just listen!  I doubt most of you will have the book in time (I’m expecting mine by April 9th) so, instead, listen to one or both of these two interviews (interviewed by Sam Harris | Krista Tippett) by meeting time. We will then plan to read 1-2 chapters per week. It is OK if you cannot commit to the weekly schedule–just make it when you can.
  4. Connect with us via Zoom and share your thoughts. That’s it!

We hope to see you there.

April 15, 6:30-7:30 pm. EvoS Book Club Weekly Meeting.
Agenda: Purchase, download, or borrow the book  (see April 8) and read chapters 1 & 2. While reading, look for a provocative, interesting or integrating question to bring back to instigate and organize the discussion.

ACT and EvoS, Feb-March 2020

Feb 24, 8-9:30 am. Fourth Mondays ACT Study Group
Group usually meets on the 4th Monday of each month. Location: The Cumberland Club. Parking in back off Spring Street. Agenda: Defusion. Bring your favorite examples, metaphors, and exercises for promoting defusion.

—–March—–

March 2, 8-9:30 am. First Mondays ACT Study Group
Group usually meets on the 1st Monday of each month.  Location: The Cumberland Club. Parking in back off Spring Street. Agenda:  Favorite ways to “physicalize” ACT metaphors (e.g., props, use of physical objects and space).

March 18, 6:30 pm+.  EvoS Book Club
Group usually meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month. However, truth be told, we change it a lot.  This month’s meeting was canceled. We hope to reschedule the discussion with Colin Reid and to resume regular book club activities on the other side of the outbreak!  Planned agenda: Colin Reid will be re-invited to discuss his work doing therapy in coordination with psychedelics. In the meantime, perhaps  read this and watch for additional resources via email. Contact Sarah if you are not getting updates about this.

March 20, 8-9:30 am. ACT Peer Consultation Group
Group usually meets on the 3rd Friday of each month. Agenda: Chronic and progressive illness. Location: In response to the coronavirus outbreak, MMC has suspended public use of meeting rooms. Rather than secure an alternate space, it seems prudent to move to an online format for a while. Also, as I suspect many of us will soon be struggling with social isolation and cabin fever, I would prefer to have a less-than-ideal online meeting than no meeting at all. Look for an email with zoom link or similar. I  hope you can attend!

  • To make the process go more smoothly, please sign up for a free basic Zoom account now and download/install software, which will make it quicker and easier to join the meeting.
  • Click here for Zoom meeting Friday @ 8:00 am.

March 23, 8-9:30 am. Fourth Mondays ACT Study Group
Group usually meets on the 4th Monday of each month. Location: Group usually meets at The Cumberland Club.  In response to the coronavirus outbreak, it seems prudent to move to an online format for a while. Also, as I suspect many of us will soon be struggling with social isolation and cabin fever, I would prefer to have a less-than-ideal online meeting than no meeting at all. Please share your thoughts about this.  In the meantime, be well! Agenda: Well, I suppose we might as well talk about coping with these strange times we live in–how you are doing it, how you are helping clients and patients, and what ACT has to offer. Look for an email with zoom link or similar.

During the intervening month, please share any videos or audio snippets you encounter that may be helpful.

Dec 20, 8-9:30 am. ACT Peer Consultation Group
Group usually meets on the 3rd Friday of each month. Agenda: We have an unusually full, two-part agenda this month. Please plan to arrive on time and we will abbreviate any check-ins and announcements to ensure we have time to cover both topics.  Part 1: Clinician burnout and what ACT suggests about how to prevent or address it. Part 2: Clinical case of patient with multiple interacting problems (addiction, chronic pain, end-of-life). Location: MMP-Family Practice @ 272 Congress St. (Please contact us if you will be attending for a first time.)

ACT and EvoS, Sept 2019

Theme for September

Jeff Matranga recently posted this Ram Dass quote on Facebook (I shared it on the SMACT Facebook Group. If you are not a member of this FB group, please let me know!):

When I am afraid of something, I come up as close to it as possible, and I notice my resistance. I allow myself to just notice the resistance, because the resistance intensifies the fear—there’s no doubt about it. Get as close to the fear as you can, noticing the boundaries of it, just being with it, seeing it as it is. Don’t grab, don’t push it away, just notice.

Ram Dass & Mirabai Bush. (2018). Walking Each Other Home: Conversations on Loving and Dying. (p. 3).

Sept 9, 8-9:30 am. First Mondays ACT Study Group
Group usually meets on the 1st Monday of each month.  Location: The Cumberland Club. Parking in back off Spring Street.

Some of us will be preparing to attend the Fall Retreat and to face our own respective mortalities (among other less scary, community-building activities, I’m sure!) with much to discuss. Regardless, if you are human, this quote pertains to you.   Agenda: We will spend some time discussing the above theme while it is fresh for some of us and, hopefully, make it fresh for others. Also, I would like to revisit the topic of the relationship between therapist self-care + life balance and therapist effectiveness in the room. Fall is the season of regrouping; what are you doing right now to move in a healthy, valued direction?

Sept 20-22. SMACT Fall Retreat 2019.  LINK.

SMACT Fall Retreat 2019

Sixth Annual Southern Maine ACT (SMACT) Fall Retreat

Sept 20-22, 2019
Cushing Island, Portland, Maine
8 CEs (will be submitted to relevant boards and pending approval)

Schedule (pending) | Example: Sample schedule from 2017

Register here!  (If interested in a scholarship, read Scholarships sections below.)

Members of the Southern Maine ACT community (SMACT, i.e., current or recent past participants in the ACT Peer Consultation Group or ACT Study Groups) are invited to join an experiential ACT weekend on Cushing Island sponsored and facilitated by our membership. The weekend has multiple purposes: Learn about ACT and have a first-person experience of ACT, share our collective wisdom, gain experience leading a discussion or workshop, connect with one another and build our community, and engage in self-care. We will do this on two levels – as clinicians and as participants – so you are invited to take both intellectual and personal perspectives. There will be a variety of topics, and all will weave into the development of 6 major processes of psychological flexibility.

For 2019, we will have a special guest!  Gina Colombatto, who runs the local Death Cafe in Portland, visited the First Mondays ACT Study Group back in May of this year. She facilitated a discussion on “the fine art of living and dying” that was very well received. Gina will facilitate one of the two offerings on Saturday along similar themes (title TBD).

We are currently assembling the curriculum for the weekend. Please consider volunteering to present one of the other three offerings. Our generous presenters are confirmed! Thank you for volunteering!  Specific wording for this year’s theme is being developed but will generally be in the broad domain of “the ACT of living and dying” or “living and dying every day.” Please contact Joel Guarna (joel.whitepine@gmail.com) or Teresa Valliere with any ideas, no matter how general (207-233-9276 or tvallier@maine.rr.com).
